If you’ve ever driven through Sylvania and wondered what’s happening behind the trees along Sylvania Avenue, the answer is quite a lot. Olander Park is the centerpiece of Outdoor Sylvania Community Parks and one of the most well-rounded recreational destinations in northwest Ohio. Whether you’re planning a family afternoon, a private event, or just looking for a place to get outside, here’s everything you need to know before you go.
What Is Olander Park?
Olander Park is a 60-acre public park anchored by a 28-acre spring-fed lake in the heart of Sylvania, Ohio. It’s the flagship park in the Outdoor Sylvania system — a community park district that also includes Fossil Park, Sylvan Prairie Park, and Whetstone Park across nearly 200 acres of maintained parkland in Sylvania Township.
The park draws visitors from across the Toledo metro area and beyond, offering a rare combination of natural beauty, recreational amenities, and community programming all in one location. It’s free to enter, with modest fees for select activities like swimming and boat rentals.
Getting on the Water: Boating & Fishing
Lake Olander is the heart of the park, and getting out on the water is one of the best ways to experience it.
Boat rentals are available in four formats: paddle boats, rowboats, stand-up paddleboards, and single or tandem kayaks. Renters must be 16 or older to take out a watercraft independently; riders 12 and older may go out without an adult (paddleboards excluded). Check in with an Outdoor Sylvania staff member at the Maintenance Shop before heading out.
Fishing is popular year-round at Lake Olander, with bait available via vending machine at the boat rental area during park hours. Ohio fishing regulations apply — anyone 16 or older needs a valid fishing license, and daily catch limits are observed.
Swim Beach
Lake Olander’s all-natural sand beach is one of the few public swim beaches in the region. Swim fees are kept accessible: $5 for Sylvania School District residents and $7 for non-residents, with children 2 and under admitted free.
For frequent visitors, a membership makes the beach effectively free. Family Memberships ($125/year) include unlimited swim beach admission for up to five family members, four free boat passes, 25% off program fees, and free parking for non-residents. Individual Memberships ($40/year) include half-price swim admission and two free boat passes.
Park Amenities
Beyond the lake, Olander Park is well-equipped for a full day outdoors:
- Walking path: A 1.1-mile loop around the park, suitable for walking, jogging, and casual strolling
- Four playgrounds positioned throughout the park
- Picnic areas with tables and open green space
- Sand volleyball courts and horseshoe pits
- Bait shop and concessions
- Restrooms available during park hours
The layout is approachable for all ages and abilities, and the combination of open lawn, wooded areas, and lakefront gives the park a genuinely natural feel without sacrificing convenience.
Facility Rentals: Host Your Next Event Here
Olander Park is one of the more underutilized event venues in the Sylvania area — which is surprising given the setting. Outdoor Sylvania offers three rental facilities at the park, ranging from open-air shelters to an enclosed community hall.
Open-Air Shelters — Two covered outdoor shelters, each seating up to 80 guests. Well-suited for company picnics, birthday parties, family reunions, and casual outdoor gatherings where you want nature as the backdrop.
Enclosed Facility (Nederhouser Community Hall) — The park’s indoor rental space, which regularly hosts community events, programs, and private gatherings. Reviewers have noted it’s an excellent fit for graduation parties, smaller wedding receptions, and group events that need a more flexible, all-weather option.
Rental availability can be checked and booked through the Outdoor Sylvania online reservation system. Given how in-demand the facilities get during spring and summer, booking well in advance is recommended.
Events & Programs: There’s Always Something Going On
Olander Park isn’t just a place to wander — it has a robust calendar of public events and programs throughout the year. Outdoor Sylvania hosts approximately 20 free or low-cost nature and education programs every month across the park system, many of them at Olander.
Annual signature events include:
- Easter Egg Hunt — A beloved spring tradition drawing hundreds of families each year
- Kids Trout Fishing Derby — A free event for children 15 and under, with optional goodie bags and t-shirts available
- Sunset Serenades Summer Concert Series — Outdoor live music through the summer months, free and open to the public
- I Love Olander Day — A community celebration of the park
- Halloween Hike — A popular fall evening event for families
- Shamrock Hunt — A spring scavenger hunt event for kids held at Nederhouser Community Hall
Beyond these flagship events, the park hosts nature walks, wellness programs, a farmers market, kids’ art workshops, star parties, and holiday-themed activities throughout the year. Most are free or available at minimal cost.
Membership: Is It Worth It?
For Sylvania area families who visit the park more than a handful of times per year, membership is a straightforward value proposition. A $125 Family Membership covers unlimited swim beach admission for up to five people, four boat passes, and 25% off program registration fees — all of which add up quickly over a summer.
Advocate ($25) and Trustee ($500) tiers are also available for those who want to more directly support the park system, with benefits that include free programs and shelter rental discounts.

More Than Just One Park
Olander is the most visited park in the Outdoor Sylvania system, but it’s worth knowing what else the district offers. Fossil Park — where visitors can dig for genuine 375-million-year-old Devonian Era fossils — is a genuinely unique experience you won’t find elsewhere in Ohio. Sylvan Prairie Park offers 320 acres of reconstructed prairie habitat and 3.3 miles of paved trail. Both are worth adding to a day trip if you’re making the drive.
Come See What All the Talk Is About
Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, Olander Park consistently delivers. It’s the kind of place that earns genuine affection from the people who use it — a community park in the truest sense of the phrase.
